Well, we hit a little snag in our trip - Yesterday Jan was hit with the effects of a stomach bug or something similar. Basically he couldn't keep anything down and his body was "evacuating", as we say, anything he's putting in. We ended up staying grounded hoping the rest would cure it.
As of this morning it was mostly the same. However, Jan decided to soldier the 60km over to Swift Current in order to have access to a bed, bathroom, and real medical facility in case it becomes necessary. The 60km went very smoothly as we won the wind gamble with tail winds most of the way.
We happened upon a group of cyclists on our way here who suggested we completely clean our water bottles with hot water and soap, as he once got ill from a tainted bottle. So today are watching tour de France and cleaning our water bottles while we rest :)
I was surprised that you guys didn't get hit by a stomach bug earlier in your trip. I'm sure everything will be fine, props to Jan for beasting it through 60km while sick.
ReplyDeleteI check your blog as part of my internet routine. Keep up the good work, they're interesting reads. Figured i'd let you know you have viewers out there.
Oh no! I hope you get better soon, Jan! Stomach bugs are the WORST!
ReplyDeleteDon't push yourselves too hard, guys! And if you need anything, remember you can let me know and Dad and I will send emergency aid.
Also, why the hell are you watching Tour de France when you're resting from a cycling trip?! Watch something unrelated to cycling! Heckle some soap operas or something.
You guys are making good progress. Should post more pics!
ReplyDeleteSmart idea about cleaning out the water bottles and whatnot. I'm actually surprised this isn't part of the nightly routine (maybe I'm just a bit of a clean-freak, though). ^_^
ReplyDeleteGodspeed, lads, and hope the stomach bug dissipates quickly!
Oof... that sucks. Hope Jan's feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteOh snap. Feel better, Jan! Being sick on the road is the worst!
ReplyDeleteWhat a "happy Canada day" that must have been. For both of you.
ReplyDelete60 km ride with the fear of "evacuations" on the horizon...
Jan truly is a beast of a man for powering through that.
I never would have thought to clean out my water bottles. All you're doing is putting water in them right? Are you guys trying to sterilize lake/river water as well? Because then I would assume it could happen. Otherwise, I would have just rinsed them out with more water at the next refuelling station.
Obviously you have only one pair of shoes, but how many pairs of shorts, socks, and underpanties do you guys bring along? Is there ever a point where you guys are doing the "hobo shower" where you wash/rinse in a truck stop bathroom?
I had to do that once after down hill biking all day in the rain and mud. I felt like a transient, washing out of the sink but it did a world of difference...
What are you guys doing for money? Just interac and VISA? or you guys got cash too? I imagine some places wont take cards.
Next time you run into one of these cool walking/biking across continents characters, you should definitely video record them. Easier to remember their stories and will provide a nice interlude for the crazy slideshow that I'm assuming you will create about the whole trip.
Hope Jan bounces back quick!
ReplyDeleteHey J & J,
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference the wind makes. Funny that you're watching the TdF - Bet it hits home even more since you're on the road. Hopefully it inspires a quick recovery for Jan :)
Gear questions:
1) have you guys been trying Gatorade or "5 Hour Energy", and noticed a difference over water?
2) Jan has a hybrid, Jason has a road bike. Has one design proven better for this trip?
3) What's on your playlists?
Thank you for sharing this crazy Journey!
Take care,
Nick
Jason and Jan must be listening to a lot of terrifyingly inspirational 80s songs.
